Family Tomb of Jesus

Via my radio show ive been getting a lot of requests for info on a book and discovery channel documentary produced by James Cameron (Titanic) about the Family Tomb of Jesus by Jacobvici and Pellegrino. Book-wise, its decent. Somewhat of a DaVinci code and Indiana Jones cross-over, but not exactly Grisham or a page turner like DVC.

What is it:

In 1980 a tomb was unearthed in Jerusalem that was marked by a chevron on the outside of the tomb. Actually some little boys discovered it, one of which whose mother, Rivka Maoz, happened to be studying archaeology in order to become a tour guide. She sees some little boys playing soccer with skulls and upon further investigation discovers 10 named ossuaries. She then proceeds to notify the Israeli Anitiquities Authority.

Based on the following they conclude that this is the family tomb of Jesus of Nazareth:

(80 stands for the yr the tomb was discovered and the 500 system is to i.d. the different tombs.)

80/505 Maria, a Latin version of Miriam. In Hebrew "Mary". A Joseph was buried next to her.
80/503 “Yeshua bar Yosef” Jesus son of Joseph. In Aramaic.
80/501 Hebrew "Yehuda bar Yeshua” Judah son of Jesus
80/506 had a cross or an “x” and was illegible
80/504 had “Yose” Jose in English. The archaeologists presume this is “ Joseph”.
80/500 Another Mary but in Greek. Presumes it to be the crypt of Mary Magdalene.

A cursory glance would intrigue most anyone. Yes, this sounds like an amazing coincidence...but read on:

1. Remember, in general postmoderns:
-don’t know history
-don’t know their Bibles
-love conspiracy theories
-love Jeus but have Christophobia

I know that sounds a little on the harsh side, but lets be real - it is what it is.

2. Three different languages are used in this tomb- Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek. This may suggest that it was actually a multi-generational tomb. And a little unlikely that they wouldve used Greek for something so personal and private.

3. In Mark 6:3, four of the brothers of Jesus are mentioned by name: James, Joses, Judas, and Simon. Jesus wouldve been approximately 30 when this incident (mk. 6:1-6) happened in Nazareth. It is referenced by the townspeople that he had sisters (at least 2), but there is no referene ever to Jesus having a brother named Matthew. Mark was written no later than 65AD, possibly earlier. Still no reference of a brother named Matthew.

4. If Jesus had had a son, he wouldve easily been the 2nd most popular guy in all of history and what have we heard and know of him? Nothing.

5. Mary Magdalene was never referred to as Mariamene as the authors suggest. The correct reading of the inscription is “Mariame and Mara.”

6. Symbols. The ornamental chevron on the outside of the tomb would not have reminded anyone at the time of a crown of thorns or of even necessarily of royalty, etc. In fact, it may not even necessarily be a chevron. The symbol that was being used by Christians at the time was the fish, not a cross or chevron. BTW, the crosses would not really emerge as a symbol of Christianity until the time of Constantine (4th c).

7. Joseph is never referenced in the adult years of Jesus and going back to Mark 6, Jesus is referenced as the "son of Mary" and as the carpenter. I believe this is because Joseph has passed away. 2ndly I believe Joseph wouldve been buried in Nazareth.

8. Who is James Cameron?
Biblical archaeolgist? Biblical scholar? Ph.D in Ancient Near East Studies?
None of the above. The dude's a movie producer.

p.s. the ship sank, sorry, but get over it.

Hey bro, I like the way you help us with all this fluff that is obviously an attempt to cash in on the spiritual curiosity of this age. "Hey look how much money I can make off of this crowd!" And in the meantime we are losing the depth of all of the Biblical teaching. It astounds me how shallow those who cough up $ for this stuff are! Thanks B!!

Thanks for the explaination. It is always good to learn history and gain some insight.

What I have seen on this is that they knew it was false before they made the History channel documentary on it. The history channel has become very anti-christian. I don't know who the owner of the history channel is or what the deal is with the shows they are putting out... but in my opinion they are very bias!!

MSNBC came out yesterday and also said the entire show was false.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17599355/
"In the interest of telling a good story, Pfann said, the documentary engaged in some "fudging" of the facts."

However, it did have 4 million viewers which will probably never hear the truth... unless we tell them!

Keep up the good work of telling people Bobby!

Loved it, Bobby. Thanks. I was wondering - knew it couldn't be true - but wasn't sure how to get the info to refute it. Appreciate you doing the work to help us with this. jj

Great information Bobby! Apparently
your article is getting around, a mutual friend emailed me a link to it! I love how you approach it with tact but also use sound biblical scholarship to refute this latest attempt to question our Lords deity. I appreciate the fact that you are using your God given brain to defend our faith with knowledge, wisdom, and character...when do I get my Bobby Brewer T-Shirt! Maybe you should have a catch phrase like, " Bobby's Brewing up answers to your questions " on the front and a characature of you on the back in your 1983 El Camino! Have a good one bro!

Hey Bobby and all,

Lying about the name Jesus, for profit, yet again...

One problem with the many attempts to refute these theories are the assumptions that the archeology is wrong because it doesn't match the New Testament's many dubious stories and proven interpolations. Rome did not eradicate its enemies and their competing stories and philosophies to protect the truth. They were instead striving to hide the truth and impose state approved dogma through force, deception, and fear. These are not the actions of those with a love for truth and justice. This already proven history makes the New Testament and Christian traditions among the least trustworthy sources of evidence possible.

The most interesting aspect of this Jesus Tomb story revolves around the actual names on the bone boxes compared to what is being asserted in the effort to make a profit. Pay special attention to the tortured explanations of how names like Jesus, Mary, Matthew, Joseph, and others were "translated" (interpolated) from inscriptions that actually say otherwise. Most specifically, both Christians and those who are promoting this "Jesus Tomb" discovery and its associated assertions are profiting from the very same long-term process of obfuscation and meticulous misdirection.

For anyone, whether Christian leaders and adherents or James Cameron to keep a straight face while claiming that the name Jesus was one of the most common in Second Temple Israel is highly instructive. The name that is commonly translated as Joshua was very common, but the name Jesus is a very unique and narrowly targeted construction of recent centuries that simply cannot have truthfully appeared anywhere in the ancient Near East. Likewise, many are writing that Jesus is instead the english form of Joshua, as if the millions of english speaking Christians and Jews named Joshua have foreign names. Furthermore, does anyone know of any person named Joshua who would seriously assert that the English form of their name is Jesus? These deceptive assertions are beyond absurd.

Bobby,

What I find so much more apalling than the redundant notion of an endless line of critics attempting to discredit the deity of Christ is the fact that a relatively short while ago, your average believer would have shaken their head and moved on. Because an increasing number of pulpits are occupied by motivational speakers (and tiresome ones, at that), fewer and fewer Christians are regularly exposed to strong expository teaching by educated theologians, leaving them sheep-like and full of questions when the next foolishness rears its head. It's an all too sad commentary.....
